"In order to achieve a desired length on gage blocks, it is often necessary to combine lengths in a a process called 'wringing'. Wringing is the process of attaching gage blocks to each other in a manner that for all practical purposes
the space between the blocks can be ignored and the combined length is
considered equal to the individual blocks."
