 Calibration Tip: Wringing Gage Blocks

In order to achieve a desired length on gage blocks, it is often necessary to combine lengths in a a process called "wringing". Wringing is the process of attaching gage blocks to each other in a manner that for all practical purposes the space between the blocks can be ignored and the combined length is considered equal to the individual blocks.

It is important to use a proper technique when wringing gage blocks so as not to compromise the integrity of the blocks. Here is one procedure that will achieve the results required without damaging the blocks:

  1. De-burr gage blocks
  1. Clean blocks thoroughly
  1. Apply a minimal amount of oil to a lint free cloth
  1. Wipe the gage blocks across the cloth applying a minimal amount of oil to the block
  1. Using another clean lint free cloth, gently wipe off excess oil from blocks
  1. Applying pressure to one of the gage blocks, Slide the gage block perpendicular across the gage block it is being wrung onto
  1. Rotate the block so both gage blocks are in same plane and appear from overhead as one block
    1. The blocks should slide without any interference of bumps or burrs and should adhere snugly to each other after rotation.
