Calibration Tip: Wringing
Gage Blocks
In order to achieve a
desired length on gage blocks, it is often necessary to combine lengths
in a a process called "wringing". Wringing is the process of attaching
gage blocks to each other in a manner that for all practical purposes
the space between the blocks can be ignored and the combined length is
considered equal to the individual blocks.

It is important to use a
proper technique when wringing gage blocks so as not to compromise the
integrity of the blocks. Here is one
procedure that will achieve the results required without damaging the
blocks:
-
Apply a
minimal amount of oil to a lint free cloth
-
Wipe the
gage blocks across the cloth applying a minimal amount of oil to the
block
-
Using
another clean lint free cloth, gently wipe off excess oil from
blocks
-
Applying
pressure to one of the gage blocks, Slide the gage block
perpendicular across the gage block it is being wrung onto
-
Rotate
the block so both gage blocks are in same plane and appear from
overhead as one block
-
The
blocks should slide without any interference of bumps or burrs and
should adhere snugly to each other after rotation.
