 Calibration Tip: Adjusting Gages

It seems a calibration training class/workshop cannot be complete without the discussion regarding adjusting of gages that belong to certain departments or employee owned gages. Experienced toolmakers and machinists are often reluctant to allow calibration personnel to calibrate or adjust their precision gages. This

reluctance can certainly be understood and should not be taken personally by calibration personnel.

Here are three tips to deal with this issue:

  1. A training certificate that states the actual type of gages you have been trained to calibrate and adjust may add a level of security and confidence to the Toolmaker and Machinist.
  1. Assure the user/owner of the precision gage that you will not make any adjustments to the gage without having the owner/user confirm the "feel" and setting that may be revealed out of tolerance during the calibration process.
  1. It is important that an attitude of cooperation is developed within the company so that Toolmakers, Machinists, Inspectors and Calibrators all realize they are on the same team and have the same goal-a Quality Product
