"Before we try to make improvements in any organization, it is important that we understand the current conditions within that organization and establish a baseline measure. This measure must then be visually communicated to everyone in the organization.

We can use a 100-point rating system to evaluate the current organization level. At regular intervals, we need to reevaluate the level of organization, comparing it to our original rating, and post the results. Graphically depicting these time-based ratings will allow everyone to see the progress being made and reinforce the importance..."

"
A machined taper fit between mating parts is a fast and secure way to put two parts together. Fast mating and good alignment make taper fits critical in two very different fields. One that most machinists are familiar with is the taper fit that aligns the toolholder and spindle on a machining center. Whether it’s an ISO, BT, CAT, R-8, Morse, Jacobs or HSK, the machined-in taper is what locks the tool in the spindle.

A taper fit that most people don’t see but often rely on is the one used in hip joint replacement. The acetabular component (hip ball socket) and femoral stem (the part that goes into the leg bone) are held together by a machined taper. Just like the toolholder, the taper aligns the two parts with a strong fit that gets tighter as it is forced in..."

Character Quote of the Month

"Success is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm."

- Winston Churchill

"In college, a 90 or 93 percent gets you an 'A' But in a Six Sigma company, 93 percent is 3 sigma. That’s 66,000 DPM— which represents a lot of room for improvement. Moving from Three Sigma to Six Sigma represents a dramatic increase in performance.

To give you a sense of the improvement, a Three-Sigma golfer, playing 100 rounds of golf per year, would miss one putt per round. A Six-Sigma golfer would miss one putt every 163 years. 3.4 DPM for most processes is impossible. And therein lies its power. Not only does it establish a scoreboard and thus some friendly competition between teams, but it also establishes a big stretch target. You’re asking people to aim for performance levels far beyond what they consider possible..."

Why have articles on character?
"Amos Lawrence was one of America’s first philanthropists. He built a successful career – and a sizable fortune – in merchandising after the War for American Independence.

However, Lawrence did not use his wealth just to increase his standard of living.  He once wrote to a fellow businessman, 'your wants may be brought within a very moderate compass; and I hope you will never feel yourself such means as…may be beneficially applied to those around you.'  Such a spirit of generosity was 'delightful' to Lawrence..."
